Coronavirus Update – 17.03.20

Dear Parent,

Thank you for your continued patience and support as we find ourselves in an unfamiliar climate. Due to the ever-changing guidance from UK and Scottish Governments and South Lanarkshire Council, we are trying to meet the needs of all our learners, parents and those who are vulnerable.

Current advice is that staff, children and young people should:

  • Wash hands frequently soap and hot water for 20 seconds
  • Use alcohol based hand rub where available if you don’t have soap and water
  • Avoid touching eyes, nose mouth and unwashed hands
  • Cover nose and mouth with disposable tissue when sneezing, coughing, wiping and blowing the nose
  • Dispose of all used tissues promptly into a waste bin. If no tissues are available, cough and sneeze into the crook of the elbow
  • DO NOT ATTEND IF THEY HAVE SYMPTOMS OF CORONAVIRUS

Self-Isolation

Those self-isolating should follow the more detailed instructions on when and how to self-isolate within the NHS inform website link below

https://www.nhsinform.scot/illnesses-and-conditions/infections-and-poisoning/coronavirus-covid19#self-isolation-advice-for-people-without-symptoms

Those wishing more general information but do not have symptoms can phone the free helpline on 0800 028 2816 (NHS 24). This helpline is open Monday –Friday, 8am-10pm and Saturday and Sunday, 9am-5pm.

Excursions

All excursions, after school clubs, parent evenings etc are to be cancelled with immediate effect. We are disappointed that our visit to Edinburgh Playhouse tomorrow is cancelled however; we have secured a full refund and hope to enjoy another school later in the year.

Tomorrow, we hope to have a ‘movie afternoon’ where the Lion King will be shown. It is not the same experience but, hopefully, will ease the disappointment slightly.

Home Learning Arrangements

There is a legal requirement to provide work for any learner who is home through self-isolation or where parents have withdrawn their child(ren). South Lanarkshire Council have indicated that further guidance to establishments will be forthcoming this week. However, staff have already started to prepare home learning packs for all pupils should the need arise. These are not yet completed and will be available as soon as possible.

In the meantime, pupils could be using their maths skills in different ways, for example weighing and measuring whilst baking a cake, biscuits etc. They could complete a piece of learning, of choice, based on what they learned from the science day on Thursday. If they access Pobble, they could use one of the many pictures to write a story. Art skills could be progressed by focussing on an artist they have researched, or look at line drawing by sketching/ drawing an item from their bedroom, fridge, house etc. Pupils could access Reading Eggs as well as Mathletics, which they are familiar with.

All passwords/email information to be given home with pupils over the coming days. If you are unsure of how to access any sites or require passwords we endeavour to email these out to parents by the end of the week.

Again, I must reiterate that there is no immediate communication advising of school closures, however, we are putting measures in place to support those currently self-isolating. Should that happen, we are also looking to use a platform called ‘Google Classroom’ where learning is distributed to classes and individuals by staff. Pupils will then submit their work remotely. Mrs Knowles is currently putting together a guide for this and will be shared as soon as possible.

Once again, thank you for your patience and understanding.

Kind regards

Mrs French

Science Day – 12th March, 20

We would like to invite you to our Science Day on Thursday 12th March 2020 between 1pm and 3pm at Leadhills Primary School. This afternoon will be part of our Science Day, where the children will be learning about how they can reduce plastic waste from entering the River Clyde, how plastic waste can affect animals, and how we can use and reuse plastics sustainably. They will be learning about this through a series of engaging workshops that will be run throughout the day.

To ensure the success of our Science Day, we require lots of plastic items so that we can run our workshops. Therefore, I am asking you kindly to bring any bottles (of all shapes and sizes, but mainly 2L drinks bottles and laundry detergent bottles) or single-use plastic bags that you no longer have use for at home into school. All your plastic items will be getting repurposed at the school for long-term use by the children during our workshops. Collection of plastic items will begin from today and will continue until 12th March.

We hope to see you at our Science Day 2020!
